SUMMARY:Street Tree Care Event
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Councilmember Shahana Hanif and Big ReUse\, the Cobble Hill Association is excited to announce a Street Tree Care Event. Join us on Sunday\, September 15 at 2pm outside 264 Clinton Street (near the entrance to Cobble Hill Park) where Gil Lopez from Big ReUse will teach us about tree care and hand out equipment and gloves before we get to work taking care of our trees in the neighborhood. We are meeting on Clinton but we will be working on residential blocks as well. Want to clean and mulch the tree outside your home? Come grab some tools and we’ll help you roll the compost bin over\, just do your neighbors too! We will be cleaning tree beds\, aerating the soil\, and laying down compost mulch. All in an effort to keep our trees healthy\, able to absorb and retain water\, and be naturally fertilized to encourage future growth. Anyone can participate (even kids!). \n\n\n\nFeel free to reach out to our local coordinator Louis Cox with any questions or suggestions: \n\n\n\nLouis@cobblehill.nyc \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP at the link below (optional\, not required) so we have an idea of numbers and can plan the amount of tree beds and which blocks we will be able to cover during the event.

SUMMARY:Summer Swing: Buck and a Quarter Band
DESCRIPTION:Assuming the weather has held up\, we hope to close out our summer concert series in partnership with The Winter Social (@thewintersocial on Instagram) for our Second Annual SUMMER SWING! Once again\, featuring the incredible Buck and a Quarter Band. \n\n\n\nBuck And A Quarter is the NYC-based string band that plays forgotten gems and favorites of the golden age of American pop and vintage-inspired originals in a category-defying style\, described as ‘skiffle meets Cole Porter’ and ‘what do you call this kind of music?’ \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, Buck And A Quarter Quartet has appeared regularly at great clubs and venues throughout New York City\, including Sunny’s Bar\, Skinny Dennis\, Luckydog\, Jalopy Tavern\, Anyway Café\, Pete’s Candy Store\, Rockwood Music Hall\, Joe’s Pub\, 11th St. Bar\, Superfine\,  and more.  They appear the third Wednesday of every month at Barbès\, have had long-running residencies at Freddy’s Bar\, KGB Bar’s Red Room\, SISTERS Bklyn\, and Jimmy’s No. 43\, and have also played throughout the northeast at venues including the Tri-State Jazz Society and The Pennsylvania Jazz Society. \n\n\n\nTo support more events like this\, please consider making a donation to the Cobble Hill Community Fund.

SUMMARY:Cobble Hill Music In the Park: Andrea Wolper Trio
DESCRIPTION:After two weather related cancellations\, our fingers are crossed that we will finally be able to showcase the Andrea Wolper Trio on July 9th! Singer and songwriter Andrea Wolper has been called “a brilliant musical storyteller\,” a singer with “a masterful command\,” who “brings songs to life\, no matter what their source.” A mainstay of the New York jazz scene\, she has appeared in top clubs including the Blue Note\, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola\, Birdland\, Mezzrow\, the 55 Bar\, Zinc Bar\, and she tours in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to leading several of her own groups\, Andrea records and performs for other notable artists across jazz genres. Her newest recording\, “Wanderlust\,” is receiving rave reviews\, noted as “an early candidate for year-end ‘Best Of’ lists\,” and “an album that “reminds the listener of the difference between simply good and truly exceptional.” Living on the border of Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill since 2002\, Andrea will appear at Music in the Park with her longtime trio featuring two in-demand musicians: the guitarist Michael Howell\, and the double bassist (and Andrea’s husband) Ken Filiano.  www.andreawolper.com \n\n\n\nTo support more events like this\, please consider making a donation to the Cobble Hill Community Fund.

SUMMARY:Cobble Hill Music in the Park: Nate Sabat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first concert in the Cobble Hill Association’s much-anticipated Summer Music in the Park series. This annual celebration brings the community together for an unforgettable evening of live music. Kicking off our first summer concert of 2024 is Nate Sabat! Please join us from 6pm to 7pm in Cobble Hill Park. Read more about Nate below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNate Sabat is an award-winning bassist\, singer-songwriter and arranger based in Brooklyn\, NY.  Nate has written and arranged music for NPR’s Radiolab\, the Young People’s Chorus of New  York City and the Heifetz International Music Institute. Additionally\, a number of his songs are  in rotation on Sirius XM’s Bluegrass Junction channel. He has performed on stages throughout  Europe\, Japan\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Canada and the United States\, at festivals and venues  including Celtic Connections\, Savannah Music Festival\, The Caverns and Carnegie Hall. In April  2024 Nate released Bass Fiddler\, the debut full-length project under his own name\, produced by  the legendary Bruce Molsky.  \n\n\n\nWith upright bass as his sole tool for accompaniment\, Nate crafts wildly intricate arrangements\,  each one inextricably tied to its song. His playing — while rooted in American folk music —  goes far beyond any preconceived notions of the instrument’s role within the genre. With a  relaxed\, vocal sound and equal fluency with pizzicato and the bow\, Nate takes full advantage of  the never-ending variety of sounds and textures the bass has to offer. GRAMMY-winning cellist  Eugene Friesen says\, “Nate has so much going for him: The ability to propel any groove with  chops and subtlety\, a sweet bow sound that can vocalize any melody\, fiercely great intonation\,  and\, most importantly\, a musical intelligence and intuition that operates with a constant smile.” \n\n\n\nTo support more events like this\, please consider making a donation to the Cobble Hill Community Fund.

SUMMARY:Blue & Yellow Playground (Henry Park 1) Redesign Community Input Session #1
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the first step in the community engagement process around the redesign of Henry Park I (Henry Street and Pacific Street).  Madison Realty Capital is hosting a community engagement meeting to facilitate new ideas for the playground. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard. Children are welcome! \nWhile the actual construction won’t take place for at least three years\, the meetings over the next few months will result in the final design. If you’re new to this newsletter or neighborhood\, you might have a few questions about why this is happening. We’ve tried to answer a few potential questions below. Please feel free to email us at cha@cobblehill.nyc with any additional questions. \nPlease fill out this Attendance Tracker so the organizers know how many people to expect. And don’t forget to use the links at the bottom of the page to save to your calendar! \n(1) Why is this happening now? \nMadison Realty Capital plans to start construction on the 36-story condo building at 91 Pacific Street within the next 6 months. For safety reasons\, the Department of Buildings has determined that about 6 months after construction starts\, the Blue & Yellow Playground must close. Madison anticipates that closure will last for approximately 30 months\, and intends to perform all of the work related to the maintenance and re-design of the playground during that time.     \n  \n(2) What role does the Cobble Hill Association play in all of this?  \nAs with everything related to the re-development of the former LICH site\, our job is to advocate for the community. We can’t control what the buildings look like or how long closures last\, but we can make sure all rules and regulations are being followed and work with the developers and City agencies to minimize community disruptions. While we do not control the final design\, the CHA is working hand-in-hand with Madison Realty Capital and the Parks Department to ensure optimal community engagement. This means making sure you know about meetings and making sure your feedback is being incorporated into the proposals.   \n  \n(3) Why is Madison Realty Capital involved?   \nThe Blue & Yellow Playground is what is known in the City as a Privately Owned Public Space (POP). This means that\, like all City parks\, it is open to the public. However\, a private entity is responsible for maintenance. That entity used to be Long Island College Hospital. Then it was Fortis. Now it is Madison Realty Capital. One day in the future\, it will be some combination of the condo boards of the new buildings being constructed.  \n  \n(4) I love this playground as is. Why are we re-designing it? \nThe sub-structure is crumbling and needs to be replaced. That means all of the equipment has to come down. You can come to the meeting and suggest a similar structure be put up in its place\, but the existing one will have to go.

SUMMARY:Music in the Park - Andrea Wolper Trio
DESCRIPTION:An audacious artist [who] flouts genre limitations\, singing songs for the love of it and delivering an inventive\, thrilling\, appealing musical vision\,” vocalist and songwriter Andrea Wolper works “in a milieu that begins with jazz and reaches out to embrace an expressive area that is uniquely her own.” Living on the border of Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill for more than 20 years\, Andrea appears in New York clubs (The Blue Note\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, Mezzrow\, 55 Bar\, to name a few)\, and tours in the U.S. and beyond. One of the “great jazz singers” in Scott Yanow’s book\, “The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide” (Back Beat Books)\, Andrea’s recordings as both leader and side person have been on many best-of-year lists\, and Cadence Magazine calls her “easily superior…in the singer/songwriter category.” Andrea will appear at Music in the Park with her longtime trio featuring guitarist Michael Howell and bassist Ken Filiano (also a local—and Andrea’s husband!). “Highly recommended for anyone who believes in the timeless essence of cool. \nwww.andreawolper.com
