SUMMARY:Blue & Yellow Playground (Henry Park 1) Redesign Community Input Session #1
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the first step in the community engagement process around the redesign of Henry Park I (Henry Street and Pacific Street).  Madison Realty Capital is hosting a community engagement meeting to facilitate new ideas for the playground. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard. Children are welcome! \nWhile the actual construction won’t take place for at least three years\, the meetings over the next few months will result in the final design. If you’re new to this newsletter or neighborhood\, you might have a few questions about why this is happening. We’ve tried to answer a few potential questions below. Please feel free to email us at cha@cobblehill.nyc with any additional questions. \nPlease fill out this Attendance Tracker so the organizers know how many people to expect. And don’t forget to use the links at the bottom of the page to save to your calendar! \n(1) Why is this happening now? \nMadison Realty Capital plans to start construction on the 36-story condo building at 91 Pacific Street within the next 6 months. For safety reasons\, the Department of Buildings has determined that about 6 months after construction starts\, the Blue & Yellow Playground must close. Madison anticipates that closure will last for approximately 30 months\, and intends to perform all of the work related to the maintenance and re-design of the playground during that time.     \n  \n(2) What role does the Cobble Hill Association play in all of this?  \nAs with everything related to the re-development of the former LICH site\, our job is to advocate for the community. We can’t control what the buildings look like or how long closures last\, but we can make sure all rules and regulations are being followed and work with the developers and City agencies to minimize community disruptions. While we do not control the final design\, the CHA is working hand-in-hand with Madison Realty Capital and the Parks Department to ensure optimal community engagement. This means making sure you know about meetings and making sure your feedback is being incorporated into the proposals.   \n  \n(3) Why is Madison Realty Capital involved?   \nThe Blue & Yellow Playground is what is known in the City as a Privately Owned Public Space (POP). This means that\, like all City parks\, it is open to the public. However\, a private entity is responsible for maintenance. That entity used to be Long Island College Hospital. Then it was Fortis. Now it is Madison Realty Capital. One day in the future\, it will be some combination of the condo boards of the new buildings being constructed.  \n  \n(4) I love this playground as is. Why are we re-designing it? \nThe sub-structure is crumbling and needs to be replaced. That means all of the equipment has to come down. You can come to the meeting and suggest a similar structure be put up in its place\, but the existing one will have to go.

SUMMARY:Music in the Park - Andrea Wolper Trio
DESCRIPTION:An audacious artist [who] flouts genre limitations\, singing songs for the love of it and delivering an inventive\, thrilling\, appealing musical vision\,” vocalist and songwriter Andrea Wolper works “in a milieu that begins with jazz and reaches out to embrace an expressive area that is uniquely her own.” Living on the border of Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill for more than 20 years\, Andrea appears in New York clubs (The Blue Note\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, Mezzrow\, 55 Bar\, to name a few)\, and tours in the U.S. and beyond. One of the “great jazz singers” in Scott Yanow’s book\, “The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide” (Back Beat Books)\, Andrea’s recordings as both leader and side person have been on many best-of-year lists\, and Cadence Magazine calls her “easily superior…in the singer/songwriter category.” Andrea will appear at Music in the Park with her longtime trio featuring guitarist Michael Howell and bassist Ken Filiano (also a local—and Andrea’s husband!). “Highly recommended for anyone who believes in the timeless essence of cool. \nwww.andreawolper.com

SUMMARY:Cobble Hill Association (CHA) Town Hall: The BQE; A FUTURE VISION
DESCRIPTION:Cobble Hill Association (CHA)\nTown Hall: The BQE; A FUTURE VISION\nThursday\, February 27\, 2020\n7 – 9pm\nPS 29: Located at 425 Henry Street\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us – All are welcome \nThe time is NOW to advocate for a FUTURE VISION of the BQE.  We want and need a comprehensive and transformative plan along this corridor—one that can become a model for neighborhoods where highways have divided and polluted communities.\nAt our Annual Fall meeting in November\, Comptroller Scott Stringer asked the community if they wanted him back to talk more about what is possible for the BQE.  The crowd overwhelmingly responded: YES. He will be back to give more detail and expand the discussion on February 27th. Comptroller Stringer wrote an Op-Ed that was published yesterday in the New York Daily News.  It gives you a very good sense of what will be covered and discussed at the meeting on February 27th.

SUMMARY:City Council BQE Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow morning the City Council will hold a press conference followed by a hearing on their newly released report on the BQE (below.) We encourage members of the community to attend and show support – 9AM at City Hall Park.\n\n\n\nCHA Statement:\n\n\nThe Cobble Hill Association (CHA) is thankful for the work the Council has done\, with Arup\, to write a comprehensive report of the BQE’s history\, many failed attempts\, recent proposals and the constraints of transformation. Speaker Johnson ensured our coalition and communities were included in the process and engaged in meaningful dialogue with the Council and Arup. The CHA embraces the council’s recommendations and effort in helping bring a comprehensive transformation of the BQE closer to reality. We are enthusiastic about the transformative possibilities of covering the Cobble Hill Trench and removing the deadly exit and entrance ramps in our neighborhood and will advocate for a City/State Partnership governance strategy. We look forward to our continued involvement with the Council to reshape the future of the BQE\, Brooklyn\, and New York City.\n\n\nEvent details:\n“The Future of the BQE”\nTuesday\, February 25\, 2020 \nPress Conference – 9:00am – City Hall Park (South of City Hall\, Manhattan)\nPublic Hearing – 10:00am – Council Chambers at City Hall\, Manhattan \nCity Council Transportation Committee\nChair\, Ydanis A.
