The CHA board are merely the community’s representatives – the real power of this organization comes from your involvement! To that end, the Board has now met several times, and we have organized Committees/Initiatives which we would like to open to the community. A summary of each committee is below. If you are interested in learning more about, or joining one (or more!) of these committees, fill out this form and the responsible Board member will reach out.
By-Law Amendment Committee
The By-Law Amendment Committee will explore expanding the Board in order to directly involve more people in the work of the CHA and other amendments to make the board more efficient and inclusive. A fun committee for people interested in By-Law Amendments!
Block Captains
Be your street’s representative! The Board will meet with a subset of the Block Captains on a regular cycle – likely once a quarter.
Fortis/LICH
A committee to raise issues to the CHA Board that community members would like addressed at task force meetings with Fortis, the electeds and various NYC agencies on the LICH construction project. This committee has a sub-group specifically related to the redesign of the parks and playgrounds on the LICH Campus.
Transportation
The Transportation Committee works to keep our streets, sidewalks and expressway safe, efficient and resilient while planning for a future less dependent on cars and more focused on pedestrian-friendly public spaces.
As part of the Transportation Committee, committee member scan provide feedback to the CHA on issues related to the BQE construction project and the future of the BQE that they want addressed with stakeholders, including the electeds, various NYC agencies and other local communities
Membership
The Membership team is vital because we will work to implement a plan-of-action that will lead to stronger membership recruitment, engagement and retention for the Cobble Hill Association. We will be working closely with other committees as well as building our own strategies to keep CHA membership lively, vigorous and engaging.
Cobble Hill Park
Without the Cobble Hill Park Committee, the neighborhood’s most precious resource would be left to the Parks Department for upkeep and maintenance. The Parks Committee oversees cleanup, regular plant maintenance, seasonal plantings, and tree trimming, along with advising the board about capital expenses for long term care from sprinkler systems to bluestone replacement. The Parks Committee always has room for volunteers who want to work in the Park.
Communications
The Communications Committee has the responsibility of creating and disseminating communications from the CHA, and is responsible for the CHA website and social media platforms. The CHA will be working to develop an integrated communications strategy across the various platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.
Waterfront
The Waterfront Committee oversees future planning of Port Authority Piers 7 – 12, ensuring that Cobble Hill has a seat in any discussions regarding the use or development of our waterfront.
Historical
The Historical Committee documents and archives the neighborhood’s rich history. Check out the history section at cobblehill.nyc to see some of their past work. Future committee goals include documenting oral histories and creating a digital archive of historic photos, maps and ephemera.
Community Life/Events
The Community Life committee organizes and advertises community events including the Summer Concert series and the Cobble Hill Halloween parade.
Cobble Hill Trees
Cobble Hill was named the neighborhood with the most street trees per square mile. The Trees Committee oversees planting, protecting, maintaining and enhancing the various street trees within the boundaries of Cobble Hill. The Trees Committee also coordinates with the Cobble Hill Park Committee to tend to the trees in Cobble Hill Park.
Schools
The Schools Committee keeps the community appraised of happenings in District 15 and liaises with the public schools in Cobble Hill.
Police & Sanitation
The Police and Sanitation Committee interfaces with the 76th Precinct on issues affecting our community.
Community Service
The Community Service Committee is a new committee aimed at gathering volunteers for community service projects both in Cobble Hill and our greater Brooklyn community. Teens are welcome to join!
Landmark Preservation
The duty of the Landmark Preservation Committee is to protect, preserve, and promote the integrity of the architectural heritage of Cobble Hill. It is the liaison between the CHA and the New York City Preservation Commission, the New York State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation of the US National Park Service and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and with various non-governmental historical preservation advocacy groups. It follows any Cobble Hill applications with the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission and Community Board 6. The CHA is often asked to opine on landmarks issues including restorations or new construction. This committee is vital to preserving our historic district’s architectural integrity.
