CHA Community Update # 1

The new board thanks you again for trusting us with the future of our beautiful neighborhood. We have been meeting weekly to appoint committees and build a team to move forward in a cohesive and unified manner. The following is our report from the first month.

Special Committees

Each committee has a chair and a board liaison. The following have been initiated.

URBAN PLANNING: Co-Chairs Ben and Susan Baxt; liaison, Michael Epstein. This committee is working on a community-based plan that addresses the needs and wishes of our community with respect to the Fortis development. We will hold community meetings this summer to gather responses to the plan.

COMMUNICATIONS: Chair, Rebecca Johnson; liaison, Susan Mulcahy. The members of this committee will oversee the mailing list, email blasts, Facebook, Twitter and our blog. They are working with Bahij Chauncey (CHA webmaster) to build the NYC official website, CobbleHill.NYC, which will launch in the fall.

COMMUNITY LIFE: Chair, Michelle Mannix, liaison, George Sanchez. This committee will oversee the CHA’s social outreach and community activities and events. At the moment they are working on the summer concert series and developing new events for the fall. Details to follow. Please suggest any musical acts you think appropriate for the concert series. The committee is also looking for local businesses interested in sponsoring the series or other CHA events, so please contact us with any suggestions.

Standing Committees

MEMBERSHIP:  Leslie Cohen, membership secretary. This committee is charged with increasing the number of dues paying members. It facilitates CHA community outreach and oversees the Membership Mobilizer and Block Captain network.

COBBLE HILL PARK: Barbara Krongel, chair; liaison, Chip McEnhill. This committee monitors the city’s maintenance of Cobble Hill Park, as well as assembling dedicated volunteers for weekly upkeep.

SAFETY AND 76 PRECINCT: Jerry Armer, chair; liaison, Michael Epstein. The committee is a conduit between residents and the NYPD on issues of safety in the neighborhood. They also handle complaints and problems.

The Matter of Fortis

The board has met with our city councilman, Brad Lander, and has reopened communications with City Hall to discuss our urban plan and to restate the guiding principles with respect to Fortis’s development.

We are working to obtain legal documents and review the work done before May 11, 2016. We will provide an update in an upcoming communication.

Going forward

We received many responses to our email, “After the Pier 6 vote.” We thank you for the input and for your continued involvement with the CHA.

We will be communicating with you regularly via email. The next update will address the other committees, including the important Landmarks Preservation Committee.

Please continue to send comments, suggestions and offers of help.  One of the things that makes Cobble Hill great is our sense of neighborhood. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to promote a neighborly community.

My best wishes for an enjoyable weekend.

Warmly,

Amy Breedlove
President, CHA
