Brief Update on the BQE Design Build Issue

Dear Cobble Hill Community,

We wish you a Happy Holiday Weekend.

As you all know, the BQE section that includes the “triple cantilever” will be redesigned (Design) and reconstructed (Build) in the near future. This project will bring great disruption and discomfort to our community. As you may also know, there is a process called “Design Build” that can be used, if the legislature and governor grant permission, that would shave off $100 million of the cost of this BQE project and AT LEAST TWO YEARS (on the upfront) in the time needed to complete the project.

We have also been made aware that without Design Build and those critical two years, the existing triple cantilever infrastructure would be unable to sustain the BQE’s current load levels, forcing truck traffic onto the surrounding streets, including Cobble Hill!!  Coupled with the ongoing construction on the former LICH campus, Cobble Hill would be under constant assault from trucks on our streets.

We are grateful to our State Senator Brian Kavanagh for fighting to get Design Build included in the state budget bill now nearing completion in Albany. You can listen to his most recent argument here.

We hope the New York State Senate does the right thing and passes Design Build this weekend. And we thank Senator Kavanagh for fighting on our behalf.
