Brooklyn Marine Terminal Waterfront Development

In May 2024, Mayor Adams, along with Governor Hochul, NYC Economic Development Corporation (“EDC”), and the Port Authority of NY/NJ announced a land swap agreement whereby the State took ownership of Howland Hook in Staten Island, and the City acquired approximately 122 acres of Brooklyn waterfront extending from Red Hook to the Columbia Street Waterfront District (Piers 7-12). This portion of the waterfront is being referred to as the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, or “BMT” for short.

While part of the goal of the project is to modernize and grow the maritime opportunities, there is also space to incorporate public uses and to make critical infrastructure changes to the surrounding vehicular and pedestrian roadways. Under the leadership of EDC, the City has embarked on a public engagement process to inform the redevelopment of the BMT. The EDC website contains a plethora of resources, including a lengthy FAQ, virtual tour of the site, recordings from meetings, and presentation materials from public workshops. There is also an EDC email list that you can sign up for to receive their updates directly.

The content on this webpage is intended to breakdown the information about the process in a way that’s more accessible to members of the community. We have also started our own FAQ page to more directly answer your questions and help separate rumor from truth. The Cobble Hill Association is lucky to be on the front lines, and we have the ability to share what we learn and to get your questions and concerns in front of the decision-makers. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to weigh-in on a project with the possibility to transform our borough. Let’s work together to make sure the outcome is one we can be proud of.
